Resurrection Involves Everyone
Daniel 12:2
Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt.
John 5:24-30
"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.
28 "Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out—those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned. By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.
Acts 24:14-16 (Paul Speaking)
I believe everything that agrees with the Law and that is written in the Prophets, and I have the same hope in God as these men, that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked. So I strive always to keep my conscience clear before God and man.
* God’s adopted children get priority in the resurrection.
Malachi 3:17
"They will be mine," says Yahweh Almighty, "in the day when I make up my treasured possession. I will spare them, just as in compassion a man spares his son who serves him.
Revelation 20:6
Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.
1 Corinthians 15:20-23
But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. But each in his own turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him.
* The first resurrection is not for the wicked, but for the saints who receive eternal life.
1 Thessalonians 5:8
But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.
Hebrews 9:27-28
Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
John 14:2-3
In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
* If a dead saint is already with Christ, why does Christ have to come back to get him so that he can be with Christ where he is?
The Day of Judgment
* The day of judgment, the last great day, is foreshadowed in one of God’s appointed times. He gave us these annual holy days so that we would remember his plan of salvation. The closing assembly detailed in Leviticus 23 represents the day that the wicked dead will be judged. This appointed time has clearly not been fulfilled.
Leviticus 23:33-36
Yahweh said to Moses, "Say to the Israelites: 'On the fifteenth day of the seventh month Yahweh's Feast of Tabernacles begins, and it lasts for seven days. The first day is a sacred assembly; do no regular work. For seven days present offerings made to Yahweh by fire, and on the eighth day hold a sacred assembly and present an offering made to Yahweh by fire. It is the closing assembly; do no regular work.
* Judgment begins with God’s redeemed people. First and foremost, Yahweh’s redeemed people openly confess and admit that they have sinned. We judge ourselves and find ourselves guilty. Second, we repent or turn away from sin and seek our living Creator with our whole heart. Finally, our service will be judged at the second coming of Messiah .
1 Peter 4:17
For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God?
1 John 4:17
In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him.
1 Corinthians 3:10-15
By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Yeshua Messiah. If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.
* For those who reject God and his offer of salvation, the final judgment is much more ominous.
John 12:47-48
"As for the person who hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it. There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day.
Jude 1:4
For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Yeshua Messiah our only Sovereign and Lord.
Jude 1:14-16
Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men: "See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones to judge everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of all the ungodly acts they have done in the ungodly way, and of all the harsh words ungodly sinners have spoken against him." These men are grumblers and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage.
Revelation 20:11-15
Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
Matthew 10:15
I tell you the truth, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.
Matthew 11:20-24
Then Yeshua began to denounce the cities in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. "Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths. If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you."
Matthew 12:36
But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken.
Romans 2:5
But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed.
2 Peter 2:9
the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment
2 Peter 3:7
By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
Jude 1:6
And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.
Ecclesiastes 3:17
I thought in my heart, "God will bring to judgment both the righteous and the wicked, for there will be a time for every activity, a time for every deed."
* The resurrection of the wicked will occur after the first resurrection. At that time and not before, the wicked will wake up to their hopeless reality. They have no choice but to enter the courtroom where no lie can stand against the truth – the Lamb of God. It’s too late, but they realize how simple God’s plan of salvation was. They weep in sorrow because they forfeited the gift of everlasting life. They leave the courtroom with a full understanding of their loss. Who’s fault was it? They know it was theirs alone. They gnash their teeth as they consider their own foolish choices.
* The anguish you see revealed in the following verses is revealing the conscious emotions felt while alive at the final judgment. The verses are not describing the conscious experience in eternal death. The wicked are resurrected as mortal people. Their last thoughts are those they experience at the final judgment.
Matthew 8:11-12 (Yeshua speaking to the faithful centurion)
I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."
Luke 13:28-30 (Parable of the narrow door)
"There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out. People will come from east and west and north and south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God. Indeed there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be last."
* The parables use a common language when referring to wicked on the day of judgment.
Matthew 13:41-42 (Parable of weeds)
The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 13:49-50 (Parable of the net)
This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 22:13 (Parable of the wedding banquet)
"Then the king told the attendants, 'Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'
Matthew 24:51 (Parable of servants at mater’s return from long trip)
He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 25:30 (Parable of the talents)
And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'
Parables About Life After Death
* As we read the parables of the rich man and Lazarus and the ten virgins, listen for the following similarities.
1. All the characters in both parables fall asleep. They all die.
2. Later, they all wake up. They come back to life.
3. After waking up, one group is comforted.
4. After waking up, the other group is horrified.
5. There is some visual and verbal communication that is focused on the horrified people trying to correct their now permanent problems and panic sets in.
Luke 16:19-31
"There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
22 "The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'
25 "But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.'
27 "He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.'
"Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.' " 'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.'
31 "He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.' "
Matthew 25:1-13
"At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
6 "At midnight the cry rang out: 'Here's the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!'
"Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.'
" 'No,' they replied, 'there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.'
10 "But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.
"Later the others also came. 'Sir! Sir!' they said. 'Open the door for us!'
"But he replied, 'I tell you the truth, I don't know you.'
"Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.
* The rich man and Lazarus is a parable that Christ spoke in the hearing of unbelievers.
Mark 4:33-34
With many similar parables Yeshua spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.
* Look at the similarities between the two parables.
1. All the characters in both parables fell asleep. They all died.
2. Later, they all woke up. They came back to life.
3. After waking up, one group is comforted.
4. After waking, the other group is horrified.
5. There is some visual and verbal communication that is focused on the horrified people trying to correct their now permanent problems and panic sets in.
* This prophetic glimpse into the brief period of time between the awakening of the wicked dead and their ultimate judgment should not be mistaken for the reality a person experiences the absolute instant they take their last breath on earth. It’s what a person sees when he wakes up from death that will bring joy or shame, not what he sees while he is dead. The 10 virgins did not see anything or talk to anyone while they were sleeping. The seeing and communicating took place after they woke up.
Luke 16:22
"The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried.
* The transport by angels is certainly not a past tense event.
Matthew 24:31
And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.
Matthew 13:49
This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous
Immortality Is A Gift
1 Timothy 6:15-16
God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.
John 3:13
And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
2 Timothy 1:10
but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Yeshua Messiah, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.
Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 2:6-7
God "will give to each person according to what he has done." To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.
John 10:27-28
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish;
John 17:2
"Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.
1 John 5:11
And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
Revelation 22:17
The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let him who hears say, "Come!" Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.
* God alone is immortal and Christ alone has ascended up to heaven. Adam and all of his descendents must live on the earth or sleep in death until Christ returns with the gift of immortality. Those who are condemned in the judgment will not receive that gift.
